**GARDENING HINTS & TIPS**

  • Always use good quality seed sowing compost for a more even, and higher rate of germination.
  • A day or two prior to seed sowing bring the compost inside to warm up. If the compost is too cold the seeds will not germinate.
  • Water the compost thoroughly and allow to drain prior to seed sowing.
  • Never use butt water for your seedlings as it contains pathogens which are harmful for germination and small seedlings.
  • Before digging in your green manure run over it with the mower first. This will make it easier to dig in.
  • Avoid using mustard as a green manure if you have club root in your soil. Mustard belongs to the brassica family and will help to keep the disease going.
  • To avoid root disturbance when transplanting, use peat pots which will allow the roots to grow through them. Alternitivley use the inners of toilet rolls or make newspaper tubes.
  • When sowing Sweet Peas, dampen a piece of kitchen towel, place into a plastic container. sow the seeds on one half of the kitchen towel and fold over the other half to cover the seed and replace the lid on the container. The seed should ave germinated with in 24-48 hours, when you can remove them from the towel and pot on.
  • Summer sown lettuces do not like high temperatures and will not germinate. Sow in the evenings when temperatures have cooled. Place them in a cool spot, or against a north facing wall.
